About Me

I was born in Kurunegala on June 24 and attended Trinity College Kandy and St. Anne's College for my education. I started racing at the age of 16 after winning a motorcycle race. My two sisters encouraged me and persuaded my father to buy me a Yamaha TZ350.

MY Story

I started my career in motorcycle racing riding a Honda CB50JX at the age of 16, inspired by the Hollywood movie Silver Dream Racer," and won the first race. From a 50cc, I went straight to a Yamaha TZ350 at the age of 17 and finished 3rd. My first international race was the Calcutta Grand Prix in 1983 at the age of 19, riding the same Yamaha TZ350. I moved to Japan in 1985 at the age of 21 with the dream of becoming an international champion. I first started racing motorcycles in Japan between 1987 and 1989. I started racing cars in Japan in 1990 in the Toyota Corolla Cup, finishing 6th in the championship. Then I competed in Group N1, Formula Toyota, Formula 3, Formula Nippon (F3000), Japan GT300, and GT500. In 1995, I became the first non-Japanese Asian to win a championship, winning the N1 Championship driving a BMW M3. I was felicitated by the then-Japan Prime Minister for becoming the first non-Japanese Asian to compete in Formula Nippon (F3000). In 1997, the highest level of racing in Japan won the Japan Tokachi 24 Hours three times in the class. Participated in many 24-hour races around the world, including the Rolex Daytona 24 hours, the Dubai 24 hours, and the Bathurst 24 hours in Australia, finishing 2nd overall. In the same year, the national television station of Japan, NHK, recorded a documentary on Dilantha called Hello Japan. I lived in Japan from 1985 to 2009 and engaged in international business, exporting vehicles from Japan to many parts of the world.
